Beacon Hill

January 11, 2017

Our new song, “Beacon Hill,” was inspired by the devastating wildfires that led to a total evacuation of Nils’ onetime home of Fort McMurray, AB earlier this year.

From Nils:

On May 1st 2016, a wildfire started just southwest of Fort McMurray, a city where I’d spent most of my teens growing up. While wildfires aren’t totally uncommon in the region, the dry and above average conditions at the time quickly made the situation unmanageable. By that evening, several neighborhoods were being evacuated and by May 3rd the entire city of more than 80,000 people was being evacuated.

I remember the evening of the evacuation, watching the images on the CBC’s news reports. Beacon Hill was one of the hardest hit areas and some of the footage that came out of there made it look just biblical- real fire and brimstone sort of stuff. The next day I actually heard rumours that the high school I attended burnt down (it didn’t) but because the city was empty, no one could really confirm anything. Everyone feared the worst.

Now, like a lot people who grew up in Fort McMurray, I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the place. Growing up there, I knew it wasn’t the last stop for me but my life has become inexorably tied to the place and it’s shaped my life in more ways that I could have ever anticipated.

It’s been a number of years since I’ve been back to Fort McMurray and if I never go back then that will be my choice, but I knew the city would always be there. The idea that maybe there might not be anything to go back to one day wasn’t something that I’d ever prepared myself for.

Oddly enough, after the fire threat had passed and before the evacuation order had been lifted, there were two unrelated explosions one day apart which destroyed several houses and damaged a number of others in the area. Of the three places that I called home while living up there, I lived a stones throw from both of those explosions.

See you soon,

Thank You Amy

September 12, 2016

Hey everybody,

Amy has some news to share, and we’d like to let her share it. We’ll have some exciting RAA announcements for you guys soon. For right now, we just want to say: Amy, thank you and we love you. – Nils and Paul

To our fans & friends,

I have loved being a part of the RAA, but I’ve decided to step away from the old bass pedals, at least for now.  But I couldn’t leave without thanking you for the memories that we’ve shared together.  It has been an honour to visit your cities and countries and towns and festivals, and to perform for you and meet you and talk and take pictures and laugh and sometimes cry with you.  These are all moments I will carry with me for the rest of my life, and I’ll always be grateful to you for listening to our band and giving us the gift of the last eleven years.

Paul and Nils are my brothers for life, and they’re going to continue to be the amazing geniuses that they are and give you everything they have.  Give them hugs for me when you see ‘em out on the road.

Thanks again.

–AMY xoxo

‘Not Love Or Death’ Video!

June 18, 2015

NLOD video shoot

Our new video for “Not Love Or Death” has been making the rounds, and we’re super proud of it. Thank you to Sean Wainsteim and his entire team of creative folks who made this gem happen after so many setbacks!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J37XJxYzVOs&feature=youtu.be

“This was the first song we wrote and recorded for Mended With Gold,” says Amy. “It’s hands-down my favourite song from the record, and I think it’s one of the best songs we’ve ever done. The whole thing sounds like it’s seconds away from totally spiraling out of control and crashing hard, which is pretty much our sweet spot as a band.”

“Part killer band performance, part experimental narrative, the video for The Rural Alberta Advantage’s ‘Not Love or Death’ explores ideas of time, memory and space through the lens of one girl reflecting on her first relationship,” adds Wainsteim. “Taking place entirely in her bedroom, a roving camera drifts through moments of her past that begin to bleed together and eventually overlap.

“This video was a massive technical challenge. The goal was to create a camera that moves independent of any set narrative but give glimpses of scenes as they unfold in one space. We designed and constructed a set with moving walls for our camera to explore.”

Listen to our new song “On The Rocks”, from the upcoming album Mended With Gold

August 19, 2014

Like a lot of our songs, “On the Rocks” had a lengthy gestational period. The core elements of the song have been around for a while now, but it wasn’t until we sat down to start working on “Mended with Gold” that I feel the three of us were really on the same page with it.

When I initially wrote “On the Rocks”, it was more of a delicate finger picked song. However, after we wrapped recording of “Departing” I started playing around with it as a keyboard version and I really wanted to take it more in the vein of Casiotone For The Painfully Alone. While still touring the last record in late 2012, we still tried it as a guitar song but it just didn’t seem to click the same way as it did the first time we started performing it and as it appears on the album now.

The song itself is an amalgamation of a lot of different memories and emotions, but the heart of it centers around the acceptance of an ending relationship. I’m personally really happy with the chorus of the song:

Our Hearts they were strong / Never made a sound
Our love was on the rocks / The day we let it out
Nothing going wrong / Nothing going down

There is a resignation to the chorus, but not in a hurtful way; it’s more an honest acceptance.

As an additional note, one of the events which inspired “On the Rocks” is related to my first trip out to Newfoundland well over a decade ago. So I’m also pretty happy with the double entendre as it relates to the song. We may be The Rural Alberta Advantage, but anyone from who was knows Northen Alberta (ie. Fort McMurray) will understand that Newfoundland isn’t too far out of my wheelhouse. – Nils

Some of our best songs are the ones that we ripped apart and put together over and over, like Stamp off Departing and Frank off Hometowns. On The Rocks is one of those. It started as a warm, folky song, but we were getting frustrated with it. Then Nils had this awesome idea for a electronic rhythm and feel, and it felt right immediately – probably my favourite on the record. – Paul

Our new album, Mended With Gold, will be released on September 30th with a huge tour behind it starting in Detroit on October 9th! We can’t wait to see you all soon.
