Like a lot of our songs, “On the Rocks” had a lengthy gestational period. The core elements of the song have been around for a while now, but it wasn’t until we sat down to start working on “Mended with Gold” that I feel the three of us were really on the same page with it.
When I initially wrote “On the Rocks”, it was more of a delicate finger picked song. However, after we wrapped recording of “Departing” I started playing around with it as a keyboard version and I really wanted to take it more in the vein of Casiotone For The Painfully Alone. While still touring the last record in late 2012, we still tried it as a guitar song but it just didn’t seem to click the same way as it did the first time we started performing it and as it appears on the album now.
The song itself is an amalgamation of a lot of different memories and emotions, but the heart of it centers around the acceptance of an ending relationship. I’m personally really happy with the chorus of the song:
Our Hearts they were strong / Never made a sound
Our love was on the rocks / The day we let it out
Nothing going wrong / Nothing going down
There is a resignation to the chorus, but not in a hurtful way; it’s more an honest acceptance.
As an additional note, one of the events which inspired “On the Rocks” is related to my first trip out to Newfoundland well over a decade ago. So I’m also pretty happy with the double entendre as it relates to the song. We may be The Rural Alberta Advantage, but anyone from who was knows Northen Alberta (ie. Fort McMurray) will understand that Newfoundland isn’t too far out of my wheelhouse. – Nils
Some of our best songs are the ones that we ripped apart and put together over and over, like Stamp off Departing and Frank off Hometowns. On The Rocks is one of those. It started as a warm, folky song, but we were getting frustrated with it. Then Nils had this awesome idea for a electronic rhythm and feel, and it felt right immediately – probably my favourite on the record. – Paul
Our new album, Mended With Gold, will be released on September 30th with a huge tour behind it starting in Detroit on October 9th! We can’t wait to see you all soon.

Stream “Terrified” below:
“The Toronto-based trio, led by born-and-bred Albertan Nils Edenloff are full of nostalgic songs about hometowns and heartbreaks, marrying salt-of-the-earth acoustic rock to energetic rhythms and grand orchestral arrangements.” – Pitchfork
“The band shines in its own ability to blend pared-down composition with fast-paced percussion and lyrics that could only come from, well, rural Alberta.” – Filter
The Rural Alberta Advantage will release their highly-anticipated third album, Mended With Gold, on September 30th via Saddle Creek. The twelve-track album was recorded at Toronto’s Candle Recording with the band’s long-time live engineer Matt Lederman (Hayden, !!!, Besnard Lakes) alongside co-producer Leon Taheny (Owen Pallett, Austra, F*cked Up). Mended With Gold’s “Terrified” is available to stream and share via SoundCloud. Mended With Gold can be pre-ordered now on CD, LP, Deluxe LP (clear with gold splatter vinyl) and digitally in the Saddle Creek and Paper Bag Records online shops. The Rural Alberta Advantage has just announced an extensive tour in support of their upcoming release. A full list of tour dates can be found below.
In 2006 singer-songwriter Nils Edenloff, percussionist Paul Banwatt, and multi-instrumentalist Amy Cole came together to release their debut self-titled EP as The Rural Alberta Advantage. The ensuing years have brought two full-length albums (2008′s Hometowns and 2011′s Departing), widespread critical praise (SPIN, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR, among others), two Juno Award nominations (Best New Group, Video of the Year), the Polaris Music Prize Long List, and a hard earned reputation as one of the most impressive live bands you’ll ever see. It was through all of this that The RAA’s latest album, Mended With Gold, took shape.
Nils recalls, “Last spring, I rented a remote cottage up in the Bruce Peninsula on the recommendation of some friends to try to do some writing for the new album. It turned out to be a pretty terrifying place to be alone with your thoughts – locals told me to watch out for black bears, the heat wasn’t working and at night it sounded like the cottage was surrounded by wolves. I slept with a pocket knife at arms-reach. It’s funny the lines that will run through your head when you’re alone like that and trying to get yourself to sleep- they inspired “To Be Scared”, which is probably one of my favorite songs on the record.”
The ideas and moods created in these songs tie back to the album title Mended With Gold, embracing the idea that the breakage and repair of an object becomes part of its unique history and ultimately makes it more valuable instead of a blemish to disguise. The Rural Alberta Advantage have taken all of their successes, losses, adventures, and heartbreaks over the past few years, and forged them together into an unforgettably powerful work of beauty.

Sorry for the lack of updates here on the main page (hopefully you’ve been following our Twitter or Facebook pages for the latest). We were battling spotty internet connections from the road, but now we’re back and happy to be home from our winter/spring tour. We were able to visit many of you across Canada, the USA, and Europe, and we loved every minute of the tour (that didn’t involve trying to park our vehicles in regular parking garages or eating suspicious foodstuffs from gas stations). Good times, but for now we’re content to relax in Toronto for the next little while, rest, regroup, and get ready for the summer.
We’ll be playing several summer festivals in Canada this year- check out the dates on our Tour page.
We are also honoured to be on the Polaris Music Prize long list this year for our record, Departing. This is, quite simply, a huge deal for us and we’re really humbled to have been recognized. We also have many friends who are nominated as well (too many to name!) and it’s exciting to be in such company. Check out the list and go listen to some of the records/band you haven’t heard yet on there, they’re all great!
In other news, we’re working on a new music video for “Muscle Relaxants”, to be directed by José Lourenço, who also masterminded our “Stamp” vid.
And have you seen our “Southern Souls” video series? Check ‘em out!
Hope to see you again on the road this summer.

We’re going to play a few songs and chat about the new record, our upcoming tour, and other intriguing topics to be determined. Should be a good time! Check out www.cbc.ca/q to find out what time it airs in your neighbourhood.
